GUPI_11
_________________________________________________________________
GUPI (Get UPInews) reads in UPINEWS files and extracts the
articles to text files sans the control codes.
_________________________________________________________________
THIS IS NOT GUARANTEED TO WORK ON YOUR SYSTEM!
There is no warranty expressed or implied that this will work on
your particular system. It's been tested extensively under DesqView
and MS_DOS 6.2, OS/2 Warp and WIN95. Your specific system
configuration may react differently.
To use GUPI, place it in a directory of your choice.
Edit the GUPI.CFG file.
Line 1 - BBSNAME (Not used at this time.)
Line 2 - SYSOP NAME (Exact match for registration.)
Line 3 - TEXT OR COLOR CODE (Displayed before headline.)
Line 4 - TEXT OR COLOR CODE (Displayed after headline.)
Line 5 - NOT USED
Line 6 - NOT USED
Line 7 - Registration Code or 00000000
If you desire NO COLOR CODES, leave those lines blank - but they must
exist. (There must be 7 lines in the GUPI.CFG file.) Instead of or in
conjunction with color codes, you may add a short phrase on the line
before the headline such as:
From the UPI Newswire...@X09
- or -
@X09From the UPI Newswire...
- or -
From the UPI News Service via satellite:
The UPI_NEWS.* files must be moved into the same directory before
processing. GUPI will delete all UPI_NEWS and UPINEWS files after
processing.
Run GUPI.EXE. (Usually called from a batch file.)
GUPI will extract and read in all UPINEWS.* files and produce text output
files, which are combined listings of UPI news articles within each category.
(Filename reflects category as established in UPINEWS.* file.)
At any given time, you may expect to see such files as:
INT.NEW - INTERNATIONAL NEWS
AGN.NEW - ALL GENERAL NEWS
WAS.NEW - GOVERNMENT RELATED NEWS
HLTH.NEW - HEALTH RELATED NEWS
ENT.NEW - ENTERTAINMENT NEWS
FIN.NEW - FINANCIAL NEWS
MKT.NEW - FARM MARKETS NEWS
SPOT.TXT - SPOTLIGHT NEWS SUMMARIES
ADVISORY.TXT - ADVISORY NOTICES, ETC NOT INTENDED FOR
DISTRIBUTION AS-IS.
GENL.SPO - GENERAL SPORTS NEWS NOT INCLUDED BELOW
FOOT.SPO - FOOTBALL SCORES AND STANDINGS
BASE.SPO - BASEBALL SCORES, TRADES, ETC.
BASK.SPO - BASKETBALL SCORES, NEWS
SOCC.SPO - SOCCER NEWS
TENN.SPO - TENNIS NEWS
GOLF.SPO - GOLF NEWS
RACE.SPO - RACING NEWS
HEADLINE.LST - Listing of articles processed and file to
which moved.
These filenames will vary with each file processed, dependent on the
content. Look for new filenames as time progresses. Recently, there was
alot in a category called POL - Politics. As added by UPI, these new
files will be generated.
You will notice apparent duplicates and mis-categorized articles on
occasion. These are sometimes corrections, ommission errors, etc.
Other times, they are simply mistakes. GUPI only processes what it finds.
It doesn't MAKE the news files!
Only UPI_NEWS.* files will be processed.
Be sure that no UPI_NEWS.* or UPINEWS.* files exist in the same directory
with GUPI EXCEPT those which SHOULD be processed. (A UPINEWS.BAK file
will abort.)
GUPI APPENDS all text file output. Move or delete these as is
appropriate for your set-up and usage, based on time, date, day-of-week,
etc. For example, you may wish to keep the latest football standings until
the next week's listing is published. Perhaps the same would apply to the
Top 10 videos, etc in the Entertainment area. Likewise, you might want
to keep international news building all day. Leave the file there and
copy it to your intended destination via a batch file.
Whatever medium you use to display the output of GUPI, be sure to post
a disclaimer: NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR TYPOGRAPHICAL ERRORS OR OMISSIONS.
If someone uses your sports scores for a bet, they could be a bit upset
at any mistakes!
Possible uses for GUPI include bulletin files, local echo input,
and text-reader-door files.
Upcoming changes include:
Separating the Daily Almanac Files into individually dated files.
-or- calling them in that way from a single collective file.
Adding options for extracting to individual files, etc.
This demo version will expire on 12/31/96.
GUPI is written in Euphoria with dynamic storage allocation. It uses
available memory as needed, but will create and delete a disk swap-file
if required. You may notice a zero-length file in your tmp directory.
Delete these at will.
